SPECIAL PHILIPPINE UPDATE – DECEMBER, 2011

CAGAYAN DE ORO -ILIGAN

Dear Friends and Supporters,

It is with sadness that I write to you at this time, a time which we normally associate with “Peace and Joy”. Most of you will be aware of the typhoon which hit the island of Mindanao on Friday night devastating the cities of Cagayan De Oro and Iligan by horrific flash floods.  It was in Cagayan De Oro that I lived and worked for seven years. CagayanDe Oro is also the city which has been home for the Vann family and the Walsh family during their years of service at OBC.  (As I have been writing this I have had “Facebook” messages from Mm Penny and Mm Rhonda. We all have tears in our eyes.)

I give thanks to our Heavenly Father that all of the people that I know survived the onslaught of the water although some of them have lost all that they had. They have walked away with only the clothes they were wearing.

Oro Bible College has had damage to the roof of the “Boys’ Dorm” but even so some of the homeless are being accommodated in the dormitories and others are being accommodated in Maranatha Bible Church which is next-door to the College.

Pastor Billy Comahig has been given the responsibility of ascertaining the needs of the churches and members and so I copy his e-mails to me. I have also been in daily phone contact with him and with Pastor Reniel Comajeg.

Dear Brethren,
The storm that hit the Philippines particularly in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City brings so much damaged of the people living in the places mentioned above. Hundreds of people died and thousands of families lost their houses and belongings.

About our churches here in Cagayan de Oro, I was able to talk to Rev. Pablito Molina, the pastor of Maranatha Bible Church and initially he said that there are about more or less ten (10 ) families who are affected by the typhoon. I visited Pastor Benjie Ragas and Initially he said that there are six (6 ) families affected in Christian Community Fellowship an advent Christian Church in Macanhan. In Iligan Churches, I was able to talk to Rev. Eleazar Comahig and initially he said that there are more than fifteen families affected by the typhoon and He lost his motorbike that he used for the ministry as well as all the church musical instruments and their projector. He added that they are having some problem cooking because they lost their kitchen materials for cooking. The In Christ Glory Church was also affected and The secretary of the conference here in the Philippines said that initially there are seven ( 7) families affected by the typhoon in In Christ Glory Church. Some Oro Bible College students was also affected and a portion of the rooftop of the Oro Bible College building was also affected by the typhoon.

I will continue to give you the update as soon as I will get additional information about the affected areas. Please Help our Brethren, They really need food, clothing, and their other basic needs.

In Christ, Brother Billy M. Comahig

Pastor Billy also wrote

Dear Dad,
The people are really in need for food, Clothing and materials to rebuild and repair their Houses. Oro Bible College need money to fix the roof top of the boys Dormitory.
First of all, Your prayers are a great help for the victims of the flood. You can also help the victims by donating any amount of Money for their  food, For their Clothes, and for materials for repairing and rebuilding their houses.
In His Service,
Billy

I have also copied from ACGC e-news from Mm Nely Gamayon

“Greetings in the most precious name of Jesus Christ. As of Dec. 18, 2011, in Iligan city, Christ Glory Church and some of its members are affected, and former Bishop Eleazar Comajig and the New Life Church in Iligan are also affected. Both churches in Iligan were flooded, so the equipment, furniture, computers and everything inside the church were flooded.

“In Cagayan de Oro there are 346 dead already as of Dec. 18, 413 still missing and more than 3,000 families affected. The Maranatha church has some members affected also. They need clothing, and help for food. Their houses are still full of mud and they cannot clean it because the whole city has no water. The fire trucks are going around the city on schedule rationing water. Refilling stations are running short of water supply.

“At OBC, we have the families of our students who are affected. We housed them at the dorm. They lost everything to the flood. They also need clothing, beddings and food. I have a brother who lost his house to the flood, too. The water came into their house at 2:00 a.m. When his wife woke up and stepped on the floor, she found that the water was already knee deep. When she stood up to open the door, water rushed in and carried her up to the wall. Thank God she and my brother were still able to get out of the house and run to the neighbor’s roof. Their neighbor’s house was a two-floor building. Until today, they could not go back and clean their house because there is no water. They were not able to save anything from the house.”

Pastor Reniel has taken his wife Felany and baby Elisha Grant to Claveria and has been advised not to bring the baby back to CDO for at least a week because of the stench and airborne diseases. City water, if available, will not be fit for drinking, cooking and maybe even showering for about a month.

Pastor Benjie Ragas and his aunt Mm Marquino and her family have evacuated the Macanhan church and are staying with a church member, the church being flooded, destroying all their belongings and church equipment.

The photos are but a few of the ones I have received which were sent to me by Pastor Reniel. He asked that I did not publish some of the more graphic ones showing those in the funeral parlour and on the street. For those of you who may wish to view more you can open

Other photos are available on other news sites.

If you wish to help our brothers and sisters donations may be made to

Please pray for these, our brothers and sisters in Christ, that even in this time of sadness and anxiety they will know God’s “Peace and Joy” and be a light shining out to those who are suffering and mourning with them.

Thank you for your continued support, financially and in prayer.  May you also know the Peace and Joy of Christ at this Christmas time and in the coming year.

In the Master’s service

PHILIPPINE UPDATE – DECEMBER 2011

Dear supporters and friends of the work of our brethren in Advent Christian work in the Philippines.  It seems incredible to me that by the time you read this I will have been in the Philippines for five weeks and already be home again.  As I write I am in Cebu City with Pastor Jonathan Navacilla at Banilad.  I thank you all again, in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, for your continued, faithful support.

I arrived in Manila on October, 27 and spent the first few days staying with Pastor Roy Rocha and his family. This was a time of blessing for me in many ways.  Firstly I was able to get to know Roy’s children better, particularly Jojo and Peniel. The first full day I was there Roy took me to the church in the morning where I was able to witness a children’s holiday programme in action with the young ones being tutored in English and Maths. Parents are encouraged to pay P10 (approx $NZ0.31) per session toward the costs of books etc. Two sessions were being held each day. Pastor Roy supervises the leaders and the content of the material.

On the same evening Pastor Roy and I travelled 1 1/2hours by jeepney,  to an office block to conduct a Bible Study group for some of the company’s workers. I was privileged to be asked to speak. Fortunately I am used to being “ambushed”, so went prepared just in case. Pastor Roy had warned me that it might happen. The return journey only took 30 minutes. What a difference no traffic makes!   Our Sunday began at 4.00am so that we were able to be at the church in time to be set up ready for a 6.00am worship service. .With the service and Bible study we were finished at 10.00am. Usually following the service there is fellowship and then visitation to be done. [Read more...]

PHILIPPINE UPDATE, OCTOBER, 28, 2011

Dear Supporters and friends of the Advent Christian work in the Philippines.

It is hard to think that  it is six weeks since last I wrote.  Thank you once more for your continued support financially and in prayer for this work.  I know that those in the Philippines really appreciate this partnership which we have with them.

Unfortunately, this month, I have only heard from two of the pastors who normally contribute. [Read more...]

Philippines | Update from Roy Rocha

Praise God! Harvest is plentiful!

Alternative Learning System (ALS) is in their final stage of their study. The last week of the class was held in our church New Life In Christ Ministry (NLCM). 30 students came and I had the opportunity to lead their final exam review. It’s wonderful to develop my friendship with my students. As a result we made a facebook page Christ-Als. The purpose is for me to contact them and continue our update as friends and hopefully host a ALS students fellowship. [Read more...]

PHILIPPINE UPDATE, SEPTEMBER, 16, 2011

Dear Supporters and friends of the Advent Christian work in the Philippines.  It is a privilege to be able to report to you again. There will be two “Updates” this time. The first will be the usual one and the second will be from the Bishop of BPACCI, Rev. Efren Miranda on his first one hundred days in the position.

PASTOR ROY ROCHA, Novaliches, Manila writes to you all.  To all our friends:

We are thankful to you for your earnest prayer for me and New Life in Christ Ministry (NLCM). you may not know exactly how grateful we are each time we learn people in some parts of the world are praying for us, but we want you to know that we are what we are now because of God in some ways have answered your prayers, so, again with a greatness of heart, we thank you and we love you! Philippine Update: BPACCI Updates ( Brief report from Bishop Rev. Efrin Miranda)

I intended to spend my first one hundred (100) days of office convening with the different Department Heads directing them to establish programs and/or projects geared towards conveying basic services to all the constituents. Definitely, not to meet every expectation for the moment but we’ll tend to shift into a higher level in our journey as we make use of the remaining days God extends for us before His startling return.

On Social Concerns Department

Many, if not all of us are yearning for basic support from the Conference but are upset since we all have learned long before and even from recent reports that we are constrained on finances. I sympathize with those who in the past have suffered alone in their desperate needs for several times.

One department is now turned on to look after this relevant concern. On July 13, a preliminary meeting was made by the Bishop with the Director of Social Concerns Department encouraging him to form a committee to discuss and create programs to meet such kind of a need. And to develop the scenery of this particular spot, a committee was formed and on July 20, it convened to conceptualize a Welfare Fund called “BEARS”. It stands for BPACCI’s Emergency Assistance and Relief Services.

This project will stand by simply pulling together a portion of our local resources then mounting them up to become a Welfare Fund to be utilized in times of our exigencies. The committee that worked on this will be giving more orientation as they come and promote this program in the local churches. [Read more...]

PHILIPPINE UPDATE, AUGUST, 5TH, 2011

Greetings to all our supporters and friends of the Advent Christian work in the Philippines. We give thanks to God and to you for your continued faithfulness in prayer and other ways.

I have found communication with the Philippines somewhat difficult over recent weeks but I trust that this “Update” will help to keep you informed with what God is doing with our people there.

PASTOR ROY ROCHA, NOVALICHES, MANILA: Pastor Roy reports

Twice each week, Richard (my Intern) and I is teaching values among the students of Alternative Learning System (ALS). ALS is a government program for the out of school youth in Barangay Gulod, Quezon city. 60 youth are attending this program that we were able to led this group of students to Christ. 12 came to worship in our church and are now regularly attending. Bring the gospel of Christ to young men and women with different religious background, experiences, and ages seems not a problem when it is done according to God’s way and will.

Richard shared the word of God in one of my bible studies among  professionals in an establishment here at Quezon City.  Richard internship will be filled with different ministry experiences in an urban setting.

Indeed, working as a team make double impact for God’s glory [Read more...]

PHILIPPINE UPDATE, May 13th 2011

Greetings once again, to all our supporters and friends of the work in the Philippines.  We value your continued interest through prayer and finance.  Without this support from each of you some of the work may not be so effective.

PASTOR  JONATHAN NAVACILLA recently reported that he had conducted two baptisms,  one lady from the Umapad outreach and one from Banilad. There were to have been four baptised but in one family there was a death and in another a matter needing urgent attention.  At the time of writing the young people from Banilad, Cebu and from the churches on the islands of Bohol and Leyte have just concluded  their summer camp. The camp was held at Ubay, Bohol. Most of the organisation and running of the camp has fallen on Pastor Jonathan’s shoulders. [Read more...]
