Church Buildings in the Philippines

Which of these two buildings would you prefer to worship and fellowship in with your Brothers and Sisters in the Lord?

In an update written for Advent Christian Missions New Zealand in February of this year, the leader (Bishop) of the Philippine Advent Christian Conference – Rev Efren Miranda – wrote as follows …

“Pictures below show some of the church buildings constructed out of bamboo and other very light materials. Some of these are filled with people during worship services and are even thinking of extending but are hindered by financial matters.”

God is blessing the ministries of our Brothers and Sisters in Advent Christian churches in the Philippines, including those in rural barangays in low socio-economic areas.

We would like to help them upgrade and enlarge their buildings.

Sponsor a Student at ORO Bible College

Our Relationship with ORO BIBLE COLLEGE

ACMissioNZ has had a close relationship with the Philippine Advent Christian Conference’s ORO BIBLE COLLEGE at Cagayan de Oro since 1990, when we sent our first Work Team to assist with the construction of an extension to the boy’s dormitory building. Since that date we have sent five further Work Teams to assist with various projects and have contributed financially to many needs and projects, including the provision of on-site faculty housing and ongoing contributions to the Blessing Fund which has provided assistance with the provision of food for students. From 2001 to 2009, our missionary Grant Aldridge was closely involved on a day to day basis with the administration of the college as he served as Business Manager for American Advent Missions based in Cagayan de Oro and he continues to maintain a close liaison with the college.

ORO BIBLE COLLEGE trains young men and women from Philippine Advent Christian Conference churches and from other denominations, for service for the Lord in many different spheres of ministry. The college is accredited by CHED (the Philippine government’s Commission for Higher Education and its AB degree in Theology is fully recognised in the higher education field.

Over many years, Advent Christian General Conference, through American Advent Missions has provided support for the College by the provision of suitably qualified missionaries who have held leadership, administrative and teaching positions within the college. In response to a requirement of CHED that the college be ultimately be staffed entirely by Filipinos, the number of expatriate staff has been gradually reduced, and the last missionaries left OBC about the middle of 2011. The withdrawal of the last three missionaries during the past two years, whose salaries were paid by AAM, has brought a substantial increase in the costs at OBC, as they have employed Filipino faculty members to replace them, and the college staff has had to present a budget to the Board showing a substantial deficit for the present financial year.

The Current Need

There are presently 38 students enrolled in the four year AB Theology course at the College.

One way we can assist OBC deal with this deficit budget is to sponsor students for their tuition and /or food and lodgings costs. Most of the students who attend OBC are from poor, rural areas and neither they nor their families can afford to pay college fees. In the past OBC has subsidised their fees in an endeavour to allow them to be obedient to the Lord’s call to train for service for Him.

Students who cannot pay fees are now being sent home.

How you can help

OBC advises that for the academic year ended March 2012, the following average costs apply for the 38 present students.

Per semester Per Year
Tuition Fees/registration/matriculation NZ$152 NZ$304
Housing and food NZ$108 NZ$216
Total NZ$260 NZ$520

Sponsoring one or more students will greatly assist OBC reduce the deficit and ensure that the students can continue the studies they believe the Lord has called them to. One off donations towards sponsorship or part sponsorship will be very welcome.

Until sponsorship has been pledged to cover all the students at the college on an ongoing basis, all sponsorship will go into a pool and will be used to assist all students equally. There will be no question of some students being sponsored and some not.

Let’s bring the orphans in Myanmar up in the world!

Update 8th October

Thank you very much to those who have donated. We have now sent funds for 48 sets of bunks and mosquito nets and the present need has been met.

Update: 16th July

God is providing wonderfully again through his people. Thank you again for your generosity -  we have sent funds for 28 sets of bunks and mosquito nets. More are still needed. There are now more than 120 orphans being cared for. ( James 1:27).

Update : 14th June
Thank you very much to those who have donated – we have sent funds for 14 sets of bunks and mosquito nets. See the Myanmar newsletter for a photo. Many more are still needed.

We would like to help the more than 100 orphans being cared for by the leaders and members of the Advent Christian Conference of Myanmar. Presently most of them sleep on the floor – whether in good health or sick. We would like to provide them with bunk beds.

  • Up to 4 younger children will sleep in each set of bunks.
  • Bunks will keep them off the floor and will improve their health – respiratory problems and other sickness will decrease.
  • We would also like to include a mosquito net for both levels of each bunk. These will help prevent the children catching Dengue Fever and Malaria. [Read more...]

LET’S BRING THE LIGHT TO MYANMAR (BURMA)!!

Update 12 April ’11 – funds for 7 generators have been sent to Myanmar and funds for 2 more are ready to go – making 9 in all. Thank you very much for your care and compassion and generosity.

Update 18th March ’11: Praise the Lord – we have sent funds for a further 4 generators, making 7 in all. There are still several  homes which care for orphans and students which could use one.

Update: 9th March ’11 Thank you very much – funds for 3 generators are on the way to Myanmar. Praise the Lord and pray for further funds to complete the supply of the need.

Our Advent Christian Conference Leaders in Myanmar tell us that the lack of supply of electricity to their homes and Bible colleges is an ongoing problem and hardship for them. The supply is very unreliable especially in the summer months when it is very dry in their country. Often they only have electricity supply for parts of one or two days a week. Their families and students suffer in many ways as they do not have lighting in the evenings for preparing evening meals and for homework and study time for the orphans they are caring for (117 between the four of them), and for the Bible College students.

Ideally they need at least 6, 8 would be wonderful, but EVEN ONE would be of great assistance to one home.

Each generator costs the equivalent of NZ$650 (US$500) – they are readily available as is the diesel fuel for them.

Let’s bring the light to Myanmar!

Mobilizing Malaysian Ministry

There are a lot of opportunities to work among the immigrants (Indians and Filipinos), but we need a van to provide them transport for meetings at the Church and in homes…

We are trusting the Lord to provide us a cheap van for ministry in the near future.

The estimated cost for a good second-hand van is RM 15-18,000:

NZ$6,600 to NZ$7,900

Prayer Request:

A van is badly needed to start outreaches among the immigrants in areas where they are unable to go to Church. Please pray along for this need, as it would be a great help in our ministry.
